Oregonians, I Love You Man!

Yesterday the latest sin tax was voted down 60% to 40%. I'll update this post as election results come in today.

THIS COMMENT FROM TED -

personally, I think there should be a salvation tax--these giganto-megalachurchs are just beggin' for it.

frankly, if you have an extra large congregation and you lease out space to a fastfood chain, you should kick out a little somethin' for your false divinity.

I don't know how things are up where you are, but these super, massive, christian affairs are swelling up all over the place out here like boils on the ass of christ! they are bringing in millions of tax-free cash and swallowing up the real estate--even good farm land--so they can build their huge fortresses of god where they boogie for jesus!

tax 'em, and tax 'em now! there is nothing more corrupt and foul than a rich minister. let them send their tithe to the city and the state.

We don't have the mega churches up here so much. Although the congregations sure the fuck are VOCAL! It seems to be a southern thing where churches feel the need to build gargantuan cathedrals made out of solid glass or pure gold. Yah, if you lease space to McDonalds you damn sure better kicking down some tithe.

as far as our local sin tax goes, I am damn proud of my fellow Oregonians. The backers of this completely unfair tax are claiming that it went down to defeat because the tobacco companies spent millions of dollars on it (they did), but they don't give any credit to the Oregon electorate for having some brains. Once in a while some fucked up law gets passed here, but we are generally pretty savvy.

My problem with sin taxes is that they always target the poor. Do we have an excessive tax on champagne or caviar? No, its always beer and tobacco, the products most routinely used by the poor. This particular tax was supposed to fund health care for underpriveledged children. Well, if that's the case I say we tax juice boxes. That way ALL parents, rich or poor, will be paying for it and it is being funded by a product that is causing children to have shitty health in the first place. Can you say "High-Fructose corn syrup", boys and girls??
