"We weren't heroes.
We were guys who were there, and we did what we were supposed to do."
- Pete Lansford, US Marine, Iwo Jima

That, sir, is the very definition of hero.

Answer me a question. Why do YOU think we're in Iraq? Do you think we're in any more danger than if we weren't there? I was talking to a man who thinks killing Saddam was something we needed to do in order to be safer. My question is this: if we're so hated by the Middle East, why haven't they tried to attack us the way they did on 9/11?????? And why haven't we captured Osama bin Laden? I even heard this same man say that this is NOT a war for oil.

I think he's brainwashed on most of those points. But I do agree with what he says about illegal immigrants. I also agree with his opinion about George W. He thinks George Sr. should've invaded Iraq when he had the chance, and he also agrees with me that Clinton was a damn good president.

Hmmmmmm....

Part II

Why do they hate us in the Middle East?

We station troops on their holy grounds and sacred shrines. We attempt to impose our type and style of government on them. And sometimes, not nearly as often as W claims, they think of us as being decadent infidels.

some of the reason they hate us in the middle east is also in connection with global economy, but I think the main reason is the US's blind devotion to Israel which has been doing horrible things to the palestinians since the settlers came in to reclaim it. the israelis came in with an attitude of "this is our land and you don't belong here." it started with settlers throwing stones at children and led to military strikes on the gaza strip.

we have to honestly acknowledge the suffering that has gone on in this region for centuries--to allude to the crusades. until we do so the middle east will continue to boil against the west.

I want to point out that I have nothing but love for the jewish tradition. it is only abuses by governments that truly seem to be destroying the peace.

Oh, back to my original post. The quote from the Iwo Jima survivor is typical of the WWII veteran. Those guys seemed to have more of a simple sense of duty and obligation. They did what they had to do. Today's military seems to be filled with people who have this sense of entitlement. Unlike soldiers of the past, they do see themselves as "heroes" simply because they are in the military. While I do respect the young men and women who are serving the country, I also would like to see some respect shown to the American people (civilians) from them.
